Hello and welcome to First Movement, I am Lena Hartwig, and this is classical music for people who are starting from zero. I played viola in orchestras for fifteen years, and I still remember the first concert I went to and understanding almost nothing. So this show starts from nothing. Today, a symphony, which is the big famous kind of piece, and we are going to answer the simplest questions first: what is a movement, why are there four, and what does it mean when the tune comes back but sounds different. I will play you short pieces and pause to explain what you just heard. And at the end, the question everyone is too shy to ask, which is when you are allowed to clap.
