This week

Shreya is a surgeon at a Mumbai hospital, the eldest daughter, and since 2017 she has met and declined 40 prospective matches. Her parents have moved from hope to worry to something like acceptance. Her mother joins for the last part.

  • The early noes: easy, obvious, sometimes funny
  • The middle years: good men she turned down and cannot fully explain
  • The cost: relatives, a younger sister waiting her turn, her mother's health
  • The one she still thinks about, and what she would say to him now
  • Her mother, Mrs Kulkarni, on being the parent of a daughter who keeps saying no

Next week: a couple who found each other through a matchmaking app and told their parents afterwards.

Transcript
Namaste, this is After the Rishta Aunty Leaves, I am Ananya, and today's guest has said no more times than anyone I have met. Shreya is 33, she is a surgeon at a big hospital in Mumbai, she is the eldest daughter of a Maharashtrian family, and since 2017 she has met and declined 40 prospective matches. Forty. Some were easy. One or two, she says, were very good men, and she still cannot fully explain why she said no. Her younger sister is waiting her turn. Her mother has stopped asking, which Shreya says is worse. We talk about all of it, and at the end her mother, Mrs Kulkarni, joins the call, because I thought you should hear the other side of a daughter who keeps saying no. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Three Meetings and a Yes
