The Half Court Between Two Houses

Jerome tells the story of a barangay court in Cebu that has produced three professional players, and the volunteer coach who ran it for thirty years with one ball and a whistle.

About the show

Barangay Hoops is a weekly show about basketball as the Philippines lives it: on half courts between houses, in barangay leagues with sponsors painted on the backboard, and all the way up to the PBA and Gilas. Jerome Villanueva, who played collegiate ball in Manila and has coached youth teams in Cebu for twelve years, spends 35 to 45 minutes each week on a story and a coaching idea. One week it is the history of a famous street league, the next it is how to teach a twelve-year-old to read a pick and roll with no video and one ball. The format is part documentary, with recordings from courts and fiestas, and part practical coaching clinic for volunteers who run teams on no budget. Guests include former PBA players, barangay captains, mothers who manage teams, and referees who officiate for free. It is for fans of the game, coaches of kids, and anyone who grew up hearing a ball bounce at dusk.
