The Ceramicist Who Threw Away a Year

Ines Delacroix spent a year preparing pieces for her first solo exhibition in Bordeaux, then broke almost all of them three weeks before the opening. In this conversation she explains the decision, which she still defends, and the stricter studio routine she built afterwards.

  • Recognising work that is competent but not yours
  • The three pieces she kept and what they had in common
  • Rebuilding a routine around glazing days and throwing days
  • Showing unfinished work to one trusted person every Friday

Lea and Ines compare notes on the fear of wasting materials and why it quietly stops people from working.

Transcript
Hello, Lea Marchetti here, and this is Blank Page Tuesdays. Today's guest did something that still makes me a little nervous to describe. Ines Delacroix is a ceramicist in Bordeaux, and three weeks before her first solo exhibition she broke almost a full year of finished work. On purpose. She kept three pieces. We talk about how she knew the rest was competent but not hers, what those three pieces had in common, and the much stricter studio routine she built afterwards with throwing days, glazing days, and a trusted friend who sees unfinished work every Friday. We also talk about the fear of wasting clay, paper, paint, and time, and how that fear quietly stops people from making anything at all. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
