This week at dinner

Mariam has started asking the big questions early: do you want children, do you live with your parents, what does your mother think of you dating. Reem thinks it is a lot for a first coffee. A listener tried it anyway.

  • The three questions Mariam asks before the mains arrive
  • Why asking early is kinder than asking late, according to a divorce lawyer friend
  • Reem's counter: let someone be interesting before you audit them
  • Voice note from Hessa in Abu Dhabi: the date that ended at the starter, and why she was relieved
  • A small rule we both agreed on by the end

Next week: dating someone who is only in Dubai for two years.

Transcript
Hi, I am Mariam, this is Dinner at Thirty-Four, and across the table from me, already judging my choice of restaurant, is Reem. Say hi, Reem. This show is about dating in your thirties, in a city where half the people you meet are leaving in two years, and the other half have a mother waiting up. We are not coaches. We are two women who have been on too many dates and have started comparing notes. Tonight, I am going to confess something. I have started asking the second-date questions on the first date. Children, family, money, the lot. Reem thinks this is why I am single. I think it is why I am sane. We will argue about it, then we will play a voice note from a listener in Abu Dhabi who actually tried it. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Pass the bread.

He Is Only Here for Two Years

Half of Dubai is on a contract that ends. Mariam and Reem talk about dating people who will leave, the expiry-date conversation, and whether a good two years can be worth it.
