Learning to dance at forty

Camila talks to three adult beginners from her Rio studio, a lawyer, a bus mechanic and a grandmother, about fear, mirrors, and the week it finally clicked.

About the show

Five, Six, Seven, Eight is a weekly show about dance as a craft and a job, hosted by Camila Nogueira, who danced with a contemporary company in São Paulo for nine years and now runs a studio in Rio where adults learn to dance without embarrassment. Each 30 to 35 minute episode is a conversation with a dancer, choreographer or teacher about the work behind the performance: the rehearsal that went nowhere for six weeks, the knee that ended a career, the carnival school with 3,000 people to drill, the kathak teacher in Mumbai counting in sixteen. Camila asks about money, injuries and ageing as readily as she asks about art, because dancers live with all three. The show is for dancers at every level, from professionals to the person who signed up for a samba class last month, and for anyone who loves watching bodies move and wants to understand the discipline underneath. Warm, physical, and often recorded slightly out of breath.
