The Two a.m. Patch Half the Web Shipped

Rafael talks with Ingrid Haugen, who fixed a security bug in a tiny utility library used by hundreds of thousands of projects, about the night it happened and what came after.

About the show

Fork and Maintain is a fortnightly show about open source software and the people who keep it alive, hosted from Sao Paulo by Rafael Nogueira, who has maintained a widely used JavaScript date library for nine years, mostly unpaid. Every 45-minute episode is a long conversation with one maintainer, contributor, foundation staffer or company engineer: the person who patched a bug used by half the internet at two in the morning, the team that moved a project out of a dying company, the first-time contributor who did not know how to open a pull request. The show covers licences, funding, burnout, governance fights, security disclosures and the quiet joy of a good release. It is for developers who use open source daily and would like to understand it, and for maintainers who want to hear that they are not alone. Conversations are honest, sometimes funny, never corporate.
