Interval Bell is a fortnightly retrospective on Hindi cinema, built around one film per episode and the moment the interval bell rang in a single-screen theatre. Siddharth Venkataraman grew up in Chennai watching Hindi films with subtitles and later spent eight years as a film journalist in Mumbai, so he can tell you why Sholay changed exhibition, why the 1990s Yash Chopra romances looked the way they did, and which songs were written in a hotel room the night before the shoot. Each 45 minute episode mixes narrated history with interviews with editors, lyricists, playback singers and cinema owners, and ends with a listener segment on where they first saw the film. It is for anyone who loves the songs and wants the stories behind them, from the first-day-first-show crowd to the diaspora kid who watched on a worn VHS.
