Night Boat to a Wedding

A complete story. Teresa booked the overnight ferry to Dumaguete to attend the wedding of a man she nearly married, mostly to prove she could. Her assigned cabin mate, Paolo, is the groom's cousin, has written a speech he hates, and would rather be anywhere else. The boat takes nine hours. The cabin is small.

  • Setting: an overnight ferry across the Tanon Strait
  • Engine room and deck sound recorded on a real crossing
  • Cast: two voices and a karaoke machine on the lower deck
  • Running time about 29 minutes

Next week: a harbour cafe in Marseille and a borrowed umbrella.

Transcript
Good evening, and welcome back to Meet Me at the Ferry. I am Joaquin Dela Cruz. One complete love story every week, set wherever people wait to cross water, and tonight the water is the Tanon Strait, at night, on a ferry that takes nine hours. The story is called Night Boat to a Wedding. Teresa is going to the wedding of the man she nearly married, mostly to prove to herself that she can. Her cabin mate turns out to be the groom's cousin Paolo, who has written a best man speech he hates and would rather be anywhere else. The cabin is small. There is karaoke on the lower deck until two. We recorded the engines on a real crossing. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Lights out, boat moving.

The 4:40 to Tagbilaran

Two strangers miss the same fast craft from Cebu to Bohol and spend ninety minutes in a terminal cafe arguing about whether to take the slow boat instead. A complete story.
