This week across South Asia

Tanvir is joined by a correspondent in Colombo to cover a court ruling that could reshape a port lease, before turning to the wage review that four million garment workers are waiting on.

  • The garment wage review: what workers asked for and what factories can afford
  • Colombo's Supreme Court ruling on the port lease, explained
  • Nepal's hydropower export deal and who buys the electricity
  • A state election result that matters beyond its borders
  • The six-months-from-now story: a new rail link under construction

Next week's guest will be in Karachi for the port story.

Transcript
Hello and welcome to Monsoon Dispatch, the week in South Asia. I am Tanvir Rahman Chowdhury in Dhaka. This week we have three stories that each touch millions of people and got almost no attention outside the region. First, the garment minimum wage review here in Bangladesh, where four million workers are waiting to hear a number. Second, in Colombo, a Supreme Court ruling about a port lease that our correspondent there says could change how foreign investment works across the island. And third, a quiet electricity deal that lets Nepal sell hydropower across its borders, which might be the most important economic story in the Himalayas this decade. We will finish with the story nobody is covering yet but will be in six months. Pour the tea. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
