Leaving the only home you know

In Dubai, Doha and Riyadh, a child's residency is tied to a parent's employer. When the job ends, or the child ages out, the city that raised them asks them to leave. Zainab, raised in Doha on a Pakistani passport, and Daniel, raised in Dubai on a South African one, both went through it. They talk about the year of panic and what they would tell their younger selves.

  • How sponsorship rules actually work for adult children
  • Moving to a passport country you had only visited on holiday
  • The practical list: bank accounts, driving licences, friends
  • Grief for a place that never officially claimed you

If you are facing this year, Riya shares a short checklist at the end.

Transcript
Welcome back to Passport Full of Elsewhere. I am Riya Menon. If you grew up in the Gulf, you know the quiet rule that nobody talks about at school. Your right to live here belongs to your parent's job, and at some point, often around twenty-five, it runs out. This week I am with Zainab, who was raised in Doha on a Pakistani passport, and Daniel, who grew up in Dubai on a South African one. Both packed up the only home they had ever known and moved to a country they had visited a handful of times. We talk about the practical panic, the bank accounts and licences, the friends scattered across six time zones, and the strange grief for a city that raised you but never claimed you. Near the end I share a short checklist for anyone facing that year. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Where Are You Really From

Two guests who grew up in Jeddah and Singapore compare notes on the question they have each answered ten thousand times, and on the paragraph-long answer they eventually settled on.
