When two messaging apps become one

A merger between two popular messaging apps was announced with a cheerful blog post and almost no detail. Reza reads the terms so you do not have to, and asks what happens to the chats, the groups and the businesses built on them.

  • What the merger actually changes for existing users
  • Your old messages: where they go and who can read them
  • Privacy settings that will reset, and how to check them
  • Small sellers who run their shops through chat groups
  • Listener questions from Dubai and Jakarta on backups

A settings checklist is in the notes for after the migration.

Transcript
Welcome back to Patch Notes Weekly, I am Reza Pratama. Two messaging apps that you or someone you love almost certainly use are merging, and the announcement came as a cheerful blog post with a lot of words like exciting and almost none like data. So I read the terms, all of them, and today I will tell you what happens to your old messages, which privacy settings will quietly reset, and what this means for the thousands of small sellers who run their entire shop out of a group chat. I will keep it practical. There is a checklist in the notes for after the migration. We also have listener questions from Dubai and Jakarta about backups, which turn out to be the right thing to ask about. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
