The Wobbly Chair Clinic

Wade has fixed chairs for his street for free for 20 years. This episode puts three of them on the bench at once: a kitchen chair with loose rungs, a dining chair with a cracked back leg, and an old rocker where the dowels have shrunk. Each gets a different repair and a different lesson.

  • Knocking joints apart gently and cleaning out the old glue
  • Wood glue, hide glue, and when epoxy is the honest answer
  • Clamping without clamps using a rope and a stick
  • Why most chairs wobble because of one joint, not all of them

Listener question: a drawer that will not close in a humid apartment.

Transcript
Hello again, Wade Kettering here in the garage, and this is Sawdust and Second Tries. I have three chairs on the bench this morning and none of them are mine. For about 20 years my neighbours have been leaving wobbly chairs on my porch, and today you get to hear what happens to them. We have a kitchen chair with loose rungs, a dining chair with a cracked back leg, and an old rocker whose dowels have shrunk to nothing. Each one needs a different fix and teaches a different lesson about glue, clamps and taking your time. I will also show you how to clamp a chair with a rope and a stick when you do not own clamps, because for years I did not. Then a listener question about a drawer that will not close in a humid apartment. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

A Bookshelf from One Sheet of Plywood

Wade walks through a full bookshelf from a single 4 by 8 sheet of plywood, including the cut list, the two tools you need, and the mistake that ruined his first one in 1994.
