Reply 1988, episodes 1 and 2

The rewatch begins in a Seoul alley in the summer of 1988, with five families passing side dishes between houses. Raisa has seen it four times, Dimas has seen none of it, and they talk about why the first two hours are mostly dinner.

  • The food-passing sequence and how it sets up every relationship
  • Deok-sun, the middle child, and the birthday cake scene
  • The Olympics placard and what 1988 meant in Korea
  • Honorifics in the subtitles: how Raisa handled banmal between friends
  • Dimas's first-watch prediction, recorded for later embarrassment

Transcript
Halo, welcome to Second Watch, Seoul. I am Raisa Pramudita, I translate Korean dramas into Indonesian for a living, and this is the show where we rewatch one drama slowly, two episodes a week, with someone who has never seen it. That someone is my friend Dimas, who has somehow avoided Reply 1988 for a decade. Today we start in Ssangmundong in the summer of 1988, with five families in one alley and a lot of side dishes travelling between houses. Not much happens and I have cried at least once already. We will talk about why that opening dinner matters, about the birthday cake that breaks your heart, and about what the subtitles cannot tell you when a character switches from polite speech to casual speech. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Let us go back to the alley.

Reply 1988, Episodes 3 and 4: Jung-hwan and the Long Wait

The rewatch continues with the episode that made Jung-hwan a fan favourite, the shared umbrella, Bora's protest, and a long conversation about why this show lets scenes breathe for so long.
