The Ticket Gate That Had to Work in Half a Second

Wei Lin talks to the designer of a metro ticket gate about crowd flow, the beep nobody hears, and why half a second of delay turns a station into a queue.

About the show

Tap Target is a weekly product design show from Singapore hosted by Wei Lin Tan, who has spent twelve years designing apps for banks, hawker centre payment systems and a public transport authority. Each 30-minute episode takes one thing you use without thinking, a ticket gate, a ride-hailing map, a hospital check-in kiosk, a ketchup bottle, and traces the decisions behind it with the designer who made them. Wei Lin asks what they tried first, what the tests showed, what they argued about and what they still regret. There are also solo episodes on fundamentals: why buttons are the size they are, how colour carries meaning across cultures, what makes a form feel kind. It is for designers, developers, product managers, students and curious users who wonder why an app feels right or wrong. Guests come from Jakarta, Manila, Dubai, London and everywhere in between.
