What Does a County Clerk Actually Do

A listener asks why the county clerk is on the ballot. Marcus and a serving clerk from a mid-sized Texas county walk through records, licences, elections and the parts nobody sees.

About the show

The Civics Desk answers one civic question per episode in plain language, without a side. Host Marcus Delgado taught high school government in San Antonio for twelve years and now takes questions from listeners of every age: what does a county clerk actually do, who decides where a polling place goes, why does a bill die in committee, what is the difference between a primary and a caucus, how does a city budget get passed, what happens when a federal and a state law disagree. Each weekly episode runs 25 to 30 minutes, starts with the question, works through the answer with one guest who does the job in real life, and ends with where a listener can look it up themselves. It is for new voters, new citizens, parents trying to answer a child's question at dinner, and anyone who has nodded along in a conversation about government and quietly wished they knew the basics. No jargon survives the edit.
