Handheld battery life, measured properly

Manufacturers quote battery numbers that nobody ever sees. Mackenzie ran four current handhelds through the same three games at the same brightness and logged every minute. The results, and the settings that change them most.

  • The test method, so you can repeat it at home
  • Screen brightness versus frame rate cap: which one actually matters
  • Why one device lasted twice as long in the same game
  • Charging on a plane and the power banks that work
  • Four quick settings that nearly doubled play time

Next week: an interview with a controller engineer about why sticks drift.

Transcript
Welcome back to Thermal Paste Diaries, I am Mackenzie Dupuis. This week is about the handheld in your bag and the question everybody asks me: why does it die before the flight even takes off? I took four current handheld gaming devices, ran the same three games at the same brightness, and logged every minute until each one shut down. Some of the numbers surprised me. One device lasted twice as long as another in the exact same game, and the reason is not the battery size. I will explain what actually drains them, which settings matter and which are placebo, and the four changes that nearly doubled my play time. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Charge up and let's go.
