The Ninety Seconds Before the Gun

Lebo Dlamini is a 100 metre sprinter who froze in the blocks at a national final in 2023 and finished last. In this opening episode she takes Thandiwe through the 90 seconds before a race, second by second, and explains what she changed afterwards.

  • The difference between nerves that help and nerves that lock you up
  • A breathing count she borrowed from a swimmer
  • Why she stopped looking at the lane next to her
  • The training session that rebuilt her trust in the start

Thandiwe closes with a short routine any listener can use before a presentation, exam or race.

Transcript
Hi, I am Thandiwe Mokoena and this is Warm-Up Lap, the show about what athletes think before the whistle goes. For our first episode I have Lebo Dlamini with me, one of the quickest 100 metre runners in the country and someone who, two years ago, froze in the blocks at a national final and finished last. We are going to go through the 90 seconds before a race almost second by second. What she looks at, what she counts, what she refuses to think about. Then we talk about how she rebuilt her start after that final, and I will give you a short version of her routine that works just as well before an exam or a job interview. Lace up, this one is for anyone who gets stuck right before the thing that matters. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
