The talk episode: mobility explained

Putri was hypermobile as a young teacher and got hurt more than her stiffest students. In this episode she explains why, and what it means for anyone chasing the splits or a deeper backbend.

  • Flexibility is range, mobility is control of that range
  • Why passive stretching for twenty minutes changes little
  • Strength at the end of a range, and how to build it
  • Putri's own shoulder injury and what it taught her
  • How to tell whether you need to stretch or to strengthen

Monday's guided practice will put this into the shoulders.

Transcript
Welcome to Bend, Don't Break. I am Putri Anggraini, and Thursday is our talking day, so you can stay in your chair for this one. I want to tell you about the most flexible person I have ever met, who was me, at 24, and who was injured more often than any student I have taught since. Because flexibility and mobility are not the same thing, and the difference is why some people can fold in half and still hurt their backs picking up a bag of rice. We will talk about what mobility actually is, why holding a stretch for twenty minutes changes almost nothing, and how a little bit of strength at the end of your range will do more for your stiff body than any amount of bending.
