The decade nobody warned you about

Perimenopause can begin in the late thirties and last ten years, yet most women Aishwarya sees have never heard the word. She explains what is changing hormonally, the symptoms that get mistaken for stress or depression, and when to ask for help.

  • Irregular cycles, night sweats and the less obvious signs
  • Why anxiety and brain fog are hormonal as often as not
  • The blood tests that help and the ones that do not
  • Lifestyle changes with real evidence behind them
  • When to raise HRT with your doctor, and what to ask

Next week, a pelvic floor physiotherapist on recovery after birth.

Transcript
Namaskaram and welcome to Cycle and Season. I am Dr Aishwarya Menon, a gynaecologist here in Kochi, and this show is my answer to all the conversations I never had time for in clinic. Today we are talking about perimenopause, the years before your periods stop, which can start when you are 38 and which almost nobody warns you about. I see women every week who have been told they are stressed, or depressed, or just getting older, when what is actually happening is hormonal and very treatable. We will go through what changes, which symptoms get missed, what tests are worth doing, and how to talk to your doctor about HRT without being brushed off. Share this one with your sister. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
