Recovery nobody talks about

Millions of women leak when they laugh or cough and have been told it is the price of motherhood. Physiotherapist Deepa Varghese explains why that is wrong, what the pelvic floor does, and how a few months of guided work changes lives.

  • What the pelvic floor is and what birth does to it
  • Leaking, heaviness and pain: which symptoms need a specialist
  • Why Kegels alone are not the answer
  • Returning to running and lifting after a baby
  • Finding a pelvic health physio in India and what to expect

Deepa's home programme is linked in the notes.

Transcript
Welcome back to Cycle and Season. I am Aishwarya Menon, and I am joined today by someone I refer patients to every single week. Deepa Varghese is a pelvic floor physiotherapist, and she spends her days with women who have been leaking, aching or feeling a heaviness since their babies were born, sometimes decades ago, and were told by their mothers, their aunties and their doctors to simply live with it. You do not have to. We are going to explain what the pelvic floor is, what childbirth does to it, why squeezing exercises alone are not enough, and what a proper recovery looks like, including getting back to the gym. Deepa, welcome. Let us start with the question I get asked in whispers. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
