A real first fortnight, with knee pain

Wanjiru has done two sessions with the empty bar and both times her knees ached the next morning. Ikenna walks through what he asks every lifter in this situation, and why the answer is usually about foot position rather than injury.

  • The difference between muscle soreness and joint pain, explained plainly
  • Why knees tracking inward is the most common beginner fault
  • A simple test you can do at home with a doorframe
  • When to rest for two days and when to see a physiotherapist
  • Wanjiru's plan for weeks three and four

Transcript
Welcome back to First Barbell Club. I am Ikenna Obiora, and today we are doing something different. Instead of me talking at you, I have a listener on the line. Wanjiru is an accountant in Nairobi, she has done exactly two sessions since our last episode, and she messaged me saying her knees hurt and she is scared she has already broken something. Spoiler, she has not. But her question is the question I get more than any other from new lifters, so we are going to work through it together, live, with no editing. By the end you will know the difference between the ache that means you are growing and the ache that means stop, and you will have a two-minute test you can do at home. Let us get into it. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

The empty bar is enough

Ikenna explains why a 20 kilo bar with nothing on it is the right first workout, how to set up a squat rack, and what to do when the gym feels like someone else's territory.
