Nobody is coming to help

The hospital discharge is the moment it becomes real. Hafiz and Arif, whose daughters were born three months apart, talk through their first nights at home: what they expected, what happened, and what they would tell a man whose baby comes home tomorrow.

  • The drive home at 20 kilometres an hour
  • The first feed at home and the feeling of being in the way
  • Arif's 2am call to his mother and what she said
  • Why Hafiz, a children's nurse, still panicked over a hiccup
  • Three things to have ready before you leave the hospital

Next episode, going back to work after two weeks.

Assalamualaikum and hello, welcome to The 3am Dad Club. I am Hafiz Rahman, I am a children's nurse here in Kuala Lumpur, and last year I became a father and found out that nine years on a paediatric ward had taught me nothing about being on the other side of the cot. This show is for new dads and dads to be, and every episode I sit down with one other father and we talk about one thing honestly. Today it is the first night home from the hospital. My friend Arif is with me, his daughter is four months old, and we are going to compare notes on the silence, the fear, the feed that did not work, and the moment both of us realised that no nurse was coming. Arif, welcome, brother. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
