The shelf and the ledger

Marcus opens the show with the day a dairy cooperative asked if his shop software could track milk, and he realised he would have to write it himself. Then comes the first listen-only explainer: variables and loops, using nothing but the shelves, boxes and ledgers of a hardware shop.

  • A variable is a labelled box, and why the label matters more than the box
  • A loop is checking every shelf, one at a time, without skipping
  • Why the first program Marcus wrote counted screws
  • Three free resources he actually finished, and two he did not

This Week I Was Stuck: a listener in Pune spent four hours on a missing colon.

Transcript
Hello and karibu, welcome to Hello World at Forty. I am Marcus Odhiambo. For fourteen years I sold nails, paint and padlocks from a shop in Kisumu, and at 38 I started learning to write code at the public library because a dairy cooperative asked me a question I could not answer. Today I am going to tell you that story, and then I am going to explain two things that every tutorial throws at you in the first five minutes and never explains properly: variables and loops. I will do it with shelves and ledgers, because that is what I understood. You do not need a laptop. Just listen. And at the end, a listener in Pune tells us about the four hours she lost to one missing colon. We have all been there. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
