The loneliest job in sport

A penalty shootout is five minutes where everyone looks at one person. Chidinma sits with a Nigerian international goalkeeper to talk about preparation, the analyst's notes taped to a water bottle, what she watches in a striker's run-up, and the one save that moved her from a bench in Lagos to a contract in Europe. They also talk about what happens when you guess wrong in front of a stadium.

  • The minute before the whistle
  • Hips, planted foot and the eyes
  • The water bottle notes and whether they help
  • The save that changed everything
  • Guessing wrong and the week after

Welcome back to Her Side of the Scoreboard, I am Chidinma Okafor. As a midfielder I had one job in a penalty shootout, which was to walk to the halfway line and not look at the goalkeeper. Today I look at the goalkeeper. My guest has stood in goal for Nigeria in a shootout with the whole stadium watching her and nobody else. We talk about the sixty seconds before the whistle, what she reads in a striker's hips and planted foot, the analyst's notes taped to her water bottle, and the single save that took her from a bench in Lagos to a contract in Europe. She is also very honest about guessing wrong and the week that follows. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. This one is personal.
