Every Door Opens Outward

A complete story. Lionel buys a house outside Houma for less than it should cost and notices, on the first evening, that every door in it opens outward, even the kitchen cupboards. In a drawer he finds the previous owner's notes, one page per door, and begins reading them in order. Marisol wrote this one after a real viewing of a house with very strange hinges.

  • Content note: isolation, dread, one loud moment near the end
  • Setting: a bayou house in late August
  • Sound recorded in a real house with the doors used as instruments
  • Running time about 29 minutes

Next week: a girl whose reflection is late.

Transcript
Good evening, and welcome back to Leave the Porch Light Off. I am Marisol Vance. One complete story every week, no homework, no cliffhangers you have to carry around. Tonight's story is called Every Door Opens Outward. A man called Lionel buys a house outside Houma, in the bayou, for a price that should have worried him. On the first evening he notices that every door in the house opens outward: the bedrooms, the bathroom, the kitchen cupboards. In a drawer he finds the previous owner's notes, one page for each door, and he starts reading them in order. We recorded the sound in a real house, using the doors themselves. Content note: dread, isolation, and one loud moment near the end. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Porch light off.
