My Uber Driver Taught Me Trigonometry

A late ride from a gig in Rosebank turns into a parent teacher meeting Sipho never agreed to. Mr Mokoena remembers everything, including a specific worksheet.

  • The moment of recognition at the car window and the decision not to cancel
  • Fourteen minutes of trigonometry questions on the M1 at midnight
  • Sketch: a driver rating screen with categories for homework and attitude
  • Why Sipho tipped him anyway and what the thank you message said
  • Sketch: Mr Mokoena picks up the Minister of Education

If your teacher now drives you anywhere, Sipho wants to hear about it.

Transcript
Hello hello, Sipho Radebe here, this is Load Shedding, With Sketches, and tonight's story has haunted me for three months. I did a gig in Rosebank, ordered a ride home, and the car pulled up with a face I had not seen since grade eleven. Mr Mokoena. My maths teacher. He looked at me through the window and said, Radebe, you still owe me a worksheet. I could have cancelled. I did not cancel. What followed was fourteen minutes of trigonometry on the M1 at midnight, and I got most of it wrong. We have the full ride, we have a sketch where the rating screen has a category for homework, and we have Mr Mokoena picking up the Minister of Education, which I wish were real. Buckle up, literally, he checks. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts!
