Does Wingspan Hold Up After Fifty Plays

The first episode takes on the game that has hit the table most often at Jonas's flat. After more than 50 plays, Jonas thinks it is still the best teaching game for new players. Katrin thinks the two of them have been playing it on autopilot for a year.

  • The expansion that changed the game and the one that did not
  • Play time on the box versus play time in real life
  • Why it works at two and drags at five
  • Teaching it to a guest who said she hated board games

The hosts each give a score out of ten and explain the gap. The scoreboard for the season begins here.

Transcript
Guten Abend, and welcome to Meeple After Midnight. I am Jonas Weidemann, this is Katrin Albers across the table from me, and we have just finished our Tuesday game night in Hamburg, which is why there is a half-eaten pretzel in the microphone shot. This is a show about games we have played at least five times, because one play tells you almost nothing. Tonight we start with the game we have played more than any other, Wingspan, which has crossed this table more than 50 times. I think it is still the best teaching game we own. Katrin thinks we have been playing it on autopilot for a year and should admit it. We will cover the expansions, the real play time, and whether it works at two players, and then we score it and argue. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Forty Minutes and a Tired Partner

A listener request episode: games that finish in 40 minutes, teach in five, and still feel like a real decision. Jonas and Katrin each defend three picks and veto one of the other's.
