Forty Minutes and a Tired Partner

The most common message the show receives is some version of: we have one evening a week, 40 minutes of energy, and one of us is not a gamer. Jonas and Katrin each bring three games that answer it, from a two-player card game to a cooperative puzzle, and each gets to veto one of the other's choices.

  • Jonas's picks and why two of them are card games
  • Katrin's picks, including one she admits she only likes at midnight
  • The veto round and the one game they both refused to include
  • Setup time as the hidden killer of weeknight gaming

Listeners can send their own weeknight picks for a follow-up episode.

Transcript
Hello and welcome back to Meeple After Midnight. Jonas Weidemann here with Katrin Albers, recorded after game night as always, and tonight we are answering the message we get more than any other. It goes something like this: we have one evening a week, about 40 minutes of energy, and one of us would rather watch television. What do we play? Katrin and I each brought three games that teach in five minutes, finish in 40, and still feel like a real decision. Then we each get to veto one of the other's picks, which is where it will get personal. We will also talk about setup time, which quietly kills more weeknight games than rules complexity ever does. Pretzels are on the table, scoreboard is on the fridge. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Does Wingspan Hold Up After Fifty Plays

Jonas and Katrin have played Wingspan more than any other game they own. They argue about whether it is still worth the table time or whether habit is keeping it there.
