Daddy Snores Like a Matatu, Says Church

Sunday service, a quiet moment for the children to share what they are thankful for, and Wanjiru's youngest stands up and says he is thankful daddy snores like a matatu so he always knows where he is.

  • The exact sound the congregation made, recreated
  • The pastor's attempt to continue and the three times he failed
  • The silent drive home, and the request for chips at the roundabout
  • Listener voice notes: a daughter who told the dentist what mum says about the dentist
  • Wanjiru's new rule for the car: no sharing, only breathing

Next week: the school play, where her son has been cast as a tree and is taking it very seriously.

Transcript
Good morning, it is Wanjiru Kamau, this is The School Run Chronicles, and the car park is quiet today, which is more than I can say for church on Sunday. The pastor asked the children to come forward and share what they are thankful for. Lovely idea. My youngest, six years old, took the microphone like he had been waiting all his life, and said, I am thankful that daddy snores like a matatu, because then I always know where he is. The congregation made a sound I have never heard before. The pastor tried to continue three times. My husband looked at the ceiling like he was asking to be taken. I am going to walk you through the whole thing, the drive home, and the chips. Lock your car doors. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts!
