The Lentil Soup from Apartment 4B

Marisol's neighbour Hana moved from Beirut to Quezon City in 2019 and brought a red lentil soup that has since become a Tuesday regular in both apartments. This episode cooks it from a short shopping list and explains the two ingredients that make it taste like it took longer.

  • Red lentils, onion, carrot, cumin, lemon: the whole list
  • Toasting the cumin and why it matters
  • The lemon at the end, not the beginning
  • Stretching one pot into tomorrow's lunch with rice

Hana joins by phone for the last ten minutes to correct Marisol's pronunciation and approve the result.

Transcript
Hello again, Marisol Dimaculangan here, and this is One Pot Tuesdays. Today's dish did not come from my family. It came from Apartment 4B, where my neighbour Hana has lived since she moved from Beirut in 2019. Her red lentil soup has become a regular on our table, it costs under 150 pesos to make, and it is ready in 30 minutes, which is about how long this episode runs. We will go through the short shopping list, toast the cumin together, talk about why the lemon goes in at the end and not the beginning, and plan tomorrow's lunch from the leftovers. Hana is going to join us by phone for the last ten minutes to correct my pronunciation and tell me if I got it right. Onion first. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Chicken Adobo Without the Argument

Marisol cooks her family's chicken adobo in real time and settles the vinegar and soy ratio, the browning question, and whether potatoes belong in the pot.
