From the tanker to your bill

Oil prices have slid quietly for three weeks. Siobhan follows the price through refineries, shipping and power generation to explain when, and whether, you will see it at home. Also this week: a sharp move in bank shares and a bond auction that went badly.

  • Why oil fell and why nobody is celebrating yet
  • The lag between crude prices and your electricity bill, step by step
  • Bank shares: what a bad week really tells you
  • A government bond auction with weak demand, explained
  • What Siobhan does not know this week

Sources and the auction results are linked below.

Transcript
Welcome back to Opening Bell, Closing Thoughts, I am Siobhan Keane. Oil has been falling for three weeks and almost nobody has mentioned it, partly because falling prices are less exciting than rising ones, and partly because the reasons are a bit dull. I will give you the reasons anyway, and then I will do the thing I most enjoy, which is following a price all the way from a tanker in the Gulf to a refinery to a power station to the bill that arrives in your post. The answer to when you see it is not never, but it is slower than you would hope. Before that, a rough week for bank shares and a government bond auction that struggled to find buyers, and what both actually tell us. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
