Rates, the dollar and the yield curve

A quiet week for central banks turned into a busy week for currencies. Siobhan covers what moved, then spends the second half on the yield curve, using one importer's invoice to show what the numbers do in real life.

  • Why holding rates can still move markets
  • The dollar's rise and who pays for it first
  • Oil, copper and wheat in two minutes
  • The yield curve explained with one Nairobi invoice
  • What Siobhan does not know this week

Sources for every figure are in the notes, including the central bank statements.

Transcript
Good evening and welcome to Opening Bell, Closing Thoughts. I am Siobhan Keane, and this is the markets for people with real lives. Here is the shape of the week: central banks held rates, which sounds like nothing happened, and yet the dollar had its strongest week in months against a whole set of currencies from the rand to the rupee. I will explain why doing nothing can move everything. Then in the second half we tackle the yield curve, which is the phrase most likely to make people's eyes glaze over, and I am going to explain it using one invoice from an importer in Nairobi, because that is where it lands. No tips, no products, just what happened and what it means. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
