Chapter One

On an ordinary Tuesday the sea is a mile from where it was. The boats of Kokrobite sit on dry sand, the nets are full of air, and the Guild of Cartographers sends nobody. Efua, who sells fish at Makola with her aunt, walks the old shoreline from memory and finds that she can still see it, exactly, when everyone else has forgotten.

  • Morning in Kokrobite: the boats on the sand
  • Makola market and Auntie Adwoa's bargaining
  • Efua walks the old shoreline
  • A guild clerk notices her
  • Closing: the sea comes back thirty paces, no more

Chapter Two follows directly. New listeners should begin here.

Transcript
Akwaaba, and welcome to Saltwater Cartographers. I am Yaw Boakye-Ansah, I wrote this story and I will be telling it to you chapter by chapter, and this is chapter one, so you are right on time. Let me set the scene. In the port city of Abenase, maps are not drawn. They are walked, at low tide, by cartographers who remember the coast so exactly that the land agrees to stay. That is how it has always worked. But this morning the fishing village of Kokrobite woke up a mile from the sea. The boats are on dry sand. The Guild has sent nobody. And a fish seller called Efua, seventeen, is about to find out that she remembers a shoreline she was never taught. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Chapter one begins.

Chapter Two: The Guild Does Not Take Apprentices

A guild clerk brings Efua to the Cartographers' Hall, where the last three mapmakers argue over whether to teach her. Outside, another stretch of coast begins to forget itself.
