Chapter Two

The clerk who watched Efua walk the shoreline brings her to the Cartographers' Hall, a building of tide tables and salt-stained ledgers where only three mapmakers remain. They have not taken an apprentice in nineteen years and two of them want to keep it that way. While they argue, a messenger arrives from Prampram: the coast there is going too.

  • The walk to the Hall and the clerk's warning
  • Three cartographers, one empty chair
  • Efua is asked to draw the coast from memory
  • The messenger from Prampram
  • Closing: Efua is given a boot, not a map

Continues directly from Chapter One.

Transcript
Akwaaba, this is Saltwater Cartographers and I am Yaw Boakye-Ansah. Chapter two. If this is your first time, please go back to chapter one, because this coast only makes sense in order. When we left Efua, she had walked the old shoreline of Kokrobite from memory, the sea had crept back thirty paces, and a guild clerk had seen her do it. Tonight that clerk takes her to the Cartographers' Hall, where only three mapmakers are left and two of them would rather the Guild die quietly than teach a fish seller. They ask her to draw the coast. And while she draws, a messenger runs in from Prampram with sand on his feet and bad news. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Chapter two.

Chapter One: The Village That Woke Inland

Efua wakes to find the fishing village of Kokrobite a mile from the sea, with boats on dry sand. At the market she discovers she can remember a shoreline nobody else can.
