Starting at 61 and not stopping

Maura Keane had never run in her life when her husband had a cardiac event in 2024. She joined Siobhan's group the following spring, mostly to get out of the house. This conversation covers the two years between that first session and crossing the finish line in Salthill.

  • Why Maura's doctor said yes when she expected a no
  • Managing knees that have carried you for six decades
  • Running in the dark and the rain, and the kit that made it possible
  • The week she nearly quit and what changed her mind
  • Advice for anyone over 60 who is listening and wondering

Maura is now training for the Dublin half marathon.

Transcript
Welcome back to Slow Miles. I am Siobhan Rafferty, and this week I am joined by one of my favourite people in the world. Maura Keane turned up to my Tuesday group two springs ago in a pair of walking shoes and a raincoat, told me she was 59 and had never run for a bus, and asked if it was too late. This summer she finished the Galway Bay 10K. We are going to talk about why she started, what her knees had to say about it, how she kept going through a winter of dark evenings, and the week she very nearly packed it in. If you have ever thought you have left it too late, this one is for you. Maura, thank you for coming in. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

Thirty seconds is a run

Siobhan lays out the walk-run method she uses with every new runner, explains why breathing hard on day one is expected, and answers a voice note from a listener who is embarrassed to be seen running.
