Twenty-seven years of Thursdays

Graham and Terry met at a hardware store in Adelaide in 1998 and started playing a board game on Thursday nights. They have missed eleven Thursdays in twenty-seven years, and can list them. Lucas sat at the board with them and asked the questions they admit they have never asked each other.

  • The eleven missed Thursdays and what each one was
  • Terry's diagnosis and the Thursday after it
  • Graham's divorce and the three months he did not talk during the game
  • Why neither of them has ever said the word friendship out loud
  • What happens when one of them cannot play any more

The game is Carcassonne. Terry is winning on aggregate, Graham disputes the count.

Transcript
Hello, I am Lucas Ferreira Prado and this is Still Friends After All This, the show where I sit with two people who have been friends for a very long time and ask them, in front of each other, how it works. I have had the same best friend since the first day of school in Belo Horizonte, and I am still not sure I could answer. This week we are in Adelaide with Graham and Terry, who met at a hardware store in 1998 and have played a board game every Thursday night since. They have missed eleven Thursdays and can tell you each one, including the week after Terry's diagnosis and the three months when Graham was going through a divorce and barely spoke. We play while we talk. Neither of them has ever used the word friendship. Tonight they come close. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
