Tuesday's five stories

Results, supply chains and weather. Priya explains why one unglamorous chip part is slowing car production on three continents, and what a coalition count means for the next few weeks.

  • Election count points to a coalition, with talks expected to take weeks
  • A shortage of one chip component pauses lines at four car plants
  • Three countries log their hottest October day on record
  • A water utility announces overnight rationing in two cities
  • Rail workers suspend a planned strike after a late offer

Watch later today: the first coalition talks are due to start this afternoon, and the heat warnings run until Thursday.

Transcript
Good morning, it is Tuesday, this is Ten Before Nine, and I am Priya Nathan. Here is where we are. The votes have been counted overnight and nobody has a majority, so I will walk you through what a coalition would look like and how long it usually takes. Then a story I did not expect to lead with: one small chip component, made in just two factories, is in short supply, and car plants on three continents have paused their lines because of it. We have a heatwave that has broken October records in three countries, water rationing in two cities, and some rare good news from the railways, where a strike has been called off. Ten minutes, no shouting. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
