Asking for the raise in the same meeting

A listener in Calgary got a glowing performance review and no raise. Priyanka brings in an HR director from a mid-sized software company to explain how compensation decisions are actually made, and how to ask while the praise is still warm.

  • Why the review and the raise are decided in different meetings
  • Finding out the band for your role without asking anyone awkward
  • The sentence that turns praise into a number
  • What to do when the answer is next cycle
  • Counter-offers, and why most of them are a trap

Transcript
Welcome back to The Second Interview. I am Priyanka Sodhi. This week's listener is in Calgary, and she sent me a message that I think half of you have lived. Her performance review was glowing. Her manager used the word indispensable. And then the meeting ended with no mention of money at all. She walked out feeling grateful and slightly robbed. So I have asked an HR director who has sat in hundreds of those meetings to join me and explain how the raise and the review got separated, how to find the pay band for your role without making anyone uncomfortable, and the exact sentence that turns a compliment into a number. We also talk about what to do when the answer is next cycle, and why I tell most people to be careful with counter-offers. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
