Why your CV gets seven seconds

Recruiters are not lazy, they are drowning. Priyanka explains what she really looks at in the first seconds of a CV, why the top third decides everything, and then rewrites a Mississauga listener's summary on air.

  • The three things a recruiter checks before reading a single bullet
  • Why the summary paragraph is where most CVs die
  • Numbers, nouns and verbs: the only three ingredients
  • Live rewrite: from a paragraph of adjectives to four lines that land
  • The applicant tracking system myth and what is actually true

Send your summary paragraph to the show for a chance at the next live rewrite.

Transcript
Hi, I am Priyanka Sodhi and this is The Second Interview, the show about getting hired, promoted and paid properly. I have read something like forty thousand CVs in my career, and I want to tell you honestly what happens in the first seven seconds. It is not that recruiters do not care. It is that we are reading two hundred of these for one role, and your document has to survive a glance before it earns a read. So today I will show you exactly where my eyes go, why the summary paragraph is where most CVs quietly die, and then I will rewrite a real listener's summary live, with her permission. She sent me a paragraph of adjectives. She will leave with four lines that say what she did and what it was worth. Open your own CV while you listen. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
