Inside a budget smart doorbell

This doorbell cost 40 euros, worked for a year, and died after one wet January. Lukas opens it on the bench, narrating each step, from the rubber plugs over the screws to the surprising amount of empty space inside the shell.

  • Where the water got in and why the seal never stood a chance
  • A lithium cell glued to the board, and what that means for the owner
  • The one connector that could have made it serviceable
  • What a repairable version would have cost to build
  • Lukas's verdict and a 12 euro fix for anyone with a soldering iron

Listener questions this week cover a bluetooth speaker and a flickering monitor.

Transcript
Hallo and welcome to Torx and Tweezers. I am Lukas Reinholt, and in every episode I take one device apart on this bench and tell you what I find, honestly, while I find it. Today it is a smart doorbell that cost forty euros, worked for about a year, and then stopped ringing after one wet January. The owner asked me whether it was worth fixing. We will find out together. I have already spotted rubber plugs hiding the screws, which is never a good sign. We will look at the seal, the battery, the board, and I will give you a verdict at the end: can a normal person repair this, and what would it cost. Then listener questions about a bluetooth speaker and a monitor that flickers. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Screwdriver in hand, let's open it.

The Console That Outlived Its Fan

A ten-year-old games console arrived on the bench overheating and shutting down. Lukas cleans a decade of dust, replaces the thermal paste, and talks about why it was built to last.
