This episode

Before asking other couples to open up, Rodrigo opens up his own. Ines is a nurse in Lisbon, he is a journalist in Guadalajara, and they have met in person 14 times in three years. Recorded in two cities, then on one call.

  • How it started: a conference in Madrid and a very long goodbye
  • The calendar: shared, colour coded, with flights, night shifts and a line for sleep
  • Money: what three years of flights actually cost, with the real number
  • The Christmas fight, told by both of them differently
  • The question they have not answered yet: who moves

Next time: a couple separated by a US visa that has taken four years to arrive.

Transcript
Hola, welcome to Two Time Zones, One Calendar. My name is Rodrigo Esparza, I am a journalist in Guadalajara, and for three years my girlfriend has lived six hours ahead of me, in Lisbon. Her name is Ines, she is a nurse, and she will be on this show in about ten minutes, from her kitchen, at eleven at night her time. This show is about long-distance relationships, the practical side. Not whether love can survive distance, because clearly sometimes it can and sometimes it cannot, but how people actually do it. What time do you call? Who pays for the flights? Who moves, in the end? I thought it would be unfair to ask other couples before answering myself, so episode one is us, with the real numbers and the real Christmas fight. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
