Mira inherits a hand-drawn map, a leaky boat and a cat who refuses to leave the lighthouse. By the end of the chapter the Salt Wind has left the harbour, barely.

About the show

Captain Mira is eleven, her ship is a repaired fishing boat called the Salt Wind, and her crew is a retired lighthouse cat, a seasick parrot and a navigator who cannot swim. Together they are sailing to find the island on her grandmother's map, one chapter at a time. Hamish Caldwell narrates this continuing adventure for children aged six to eleven, with a full cast of voices, sea shanties and sound effects recorded on real boats around Fremantle. Chapters are 20 to 30 minutes long and come out every Saturday morning, each opening with a quick recap and ending with a question the crew must answer next week. There are storms, sea caves and one very polite whale, but never anything that will keep a child awake. Families who listen together will find plenty to argue about: which way to sail, who to trust, and whether the parrot is right.
