Chapter two

The Salt Wind is one day out of Fremantle and the light to the south turns out to be a lantern floating on the water, tied to something enormous. The whale is not in trouble, but a friend of hers is, and she asks the crew nicely.

  • Recap: two minutes for new listeners
  • New character: Bessie the whale, voiced very low and very slow
  • A secret revealed: Teo, the navigator, cannot swim and has never told anyone
  • Sea shanty: The Parrot Is Always Right, sung by Admiral, badly
  • The question for next week: do they follow the whale or the map
  • Running time 27 minutes

Chapter three is called The Cave That Hums.

Transcript
Welcome back aboard, sailors. Hamish here, this is Captain Mira and the Salt Wind, and this is chapter two. Last week Mira's grandmother left her a map, a leaky boat and a cat called Biscuit, and Mira, Teo and Admiral the parrot sailed out of Fremantle with a strange light glowing far to the south. Tonight we find out what that light is. I will tell you this much: it is not a lighthouse, it is not a ship, and it is tied with a rope to something much, much bigger than the Salt Wind. Something that breathes. Something that is about to say hello in the deepest voice you have ever heard. And Teo has a secret he really should have mentioned before they left the harbour. Life jackets on. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Hoist the sail!

Chapter One: Grandmother's Map

Mira inherits a hand-drawn map, a leaky boat and a cat who refuses to leave the lighthouse. By the end of the chapter the Salt Wind has left the harbour, barely.
