Chapter one

Mira's grandmother was the keeper of the Rottnest light for 40 years, and she left behind three things: a boat, a cat, and a map with an island nobody has heard of. Mira decides to go. The grown-ups decide she cannot. The parrot decides for everyone.

  • Crew introduced: Mira, Biscuit the cat, Admiral the parrot, and Teo the navigator
  • Sounds: real harbour recordings from Fremantle, a creaking jetty, gulls
  • The question for next week: what is the strange light to the south
  • Family talk: what would you pack for a voyage with no return date
  • Running time 24 minutes

Chapter two sails next Saturday. Bring a torch.

Transcript
G'day, sailors, and welcome aboard. I am Hamish, and this is Captain Mira and the Salt Wind, chapter one. Before we begin, I want you to imagine a lighthouse on a small island, white paint peeling, and an old woman who climbed its stairs every night for forty years. That was Mira's grandmother. She has just passed the light on to someone else, and she has left Mira three things. A fishing boat that leaks a bit. A fat orange cat called Biscuit who does not like boats. And a map, drawn by hand, with an island on it that is not on any other map in the world. Mira is eleven. Mira has decided she is going. Hold onto something, because the tide is turning and the Salt Wind is about to leave the harbour. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Cast off!

Chapter Two: The Light to the South

The crew sails towards the strange light and finds a fog bank, a drifting lantern and a very polite whale who asks for help. Teo admits he cannot swim.
