Building the bounce

That rolling low-end pattern you hear everywhere has a history. A Lagos producer builds one from nothing in the studio while Tobi follows the sound backwards through amapiano, fuji and highlife.

  • Building a log drum pattern live, step by step
  • What Lagos borrowed from Johannesburg and what it changed
  • The fuji and highlife rhythms underneath the modern bounce
  • Why tempo matters more than most listeners realise
  • Three new tracks worth your time this week

The three track picks are linked in the notes.

Transcript
Welcome to Lagos Tempo, I am Oluwatobi Adeyinka, and this is Afrobeats from the inside. This week we are talking about the bounce. You know the sound, that rolling low drum pattern that has been under nearly every big record for the last few years. I have a producer in the studio with me who is going to build one from nothing, kick by kick, so you can hear how it is done. And then I am going to do the thing I love, which is going backwards: through amapiano in Johannesburg, through fuji, through highlife, to show you that this bounce is a lot older than the charts think it is. We finish, as always, with three new tracks worth your time. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
