Tonight's tale

We travel north, to a cold valley in Norway where a troll sits under a stone bridge. He asks every traveller for four goats, but he only knows how to count to three, and a shepherd girl called Signe notices.

  • Where the story comes from: Norwegian fireside tales, retold for small listeners
  • The soft lesson: being clever is better when it is also kind
  • Sounds you will hear: wind, goat bells, a trickling stream
  • Try at breakfast: count to four on your fingers like Signe
  • Running time 19 minutes, with a slow fade at the end

Tuesday we go somewhere warm again. Goodnight.

Transcript
Hello again, and welcome back under the mango tree. I am Dilhani, this is Lantern Under the Mango Tree, and tonight the lantern is swinging a little, because a cold wind has come all the way from Norway. That is where our story lives. In a valley between two mountains there is a stone bridge, and under the bridge there is a troll. He is not a scary troll. He is a tired, grumpy troll who wants four goats from everyone who crosses. The trouble is, he has only ever learned to count to three. A shepherd girl called Signe is walking towards that bridge right now with exactly three goats. What do you think she will do? Snuggle down, close your eyes, and let us find out. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts, the home of gentle stories for sleepy ears.

Andare and the Pot of Sugar

Dilhani opens the lantern with Sri Lanka's favourite trickster, Andare, who convinces the king's children that a pot of sugar is poison. A story about mischief, kindness and sharing sweets fairly.
