Chapter One

Kepler Dock has nine crew, a reactor with twelve months left on its certificate and a company that has not replied in sixty days. Station chief Ana Pereira records her morning log, argues with the engineer about rationing power, and shares a quiet meal in the galley. Then the long-range sensor shows a ship coming in on a heading nobody uses anymore.

  • Ana's morning log and the rationing argument
  • The galley scene: nine people, one pot of soup
  • The sensor contact and the first sign of the unscheduled ship
  • Closing log: Ana decides not to tell the crew yet

Chapter Two follows directly. Begin here if you are new.

Transcript
Kia ora, and welcome to Last Light on Kepler Dock. I am Tamsin Ngata, the writer of this serial, and this is chapter one, so you are exactly where you should be. Here is what you need to know. Kepler Dock is a refuelling station at the far end of a trade route that stopped needing it. There are nine people aboard. The reactor has one certified year left. The company that owns the station has not answered a message in sixty days. Tonight you will meet Ana Pereira, the station chief, as she records her log, argues about power and sits down to soup with her crew. And then the sensor picks something up. Settle in, and listen for the harbour under the hum. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts. Chapter one begins now.
