Church at 3am

Esther Adjei is a nurse on a surgical ward in Kumasi. For eight years her roster has put her at work on most Sunday mornings, and for most of those years she felt guilty about it. Daniel talks with her about what Sabbath means when your work is caring for the sick.

  • What Jesus did on the Sabbath, and who complained
  • The guilt Esther carried and the elder who finally lifted it
  • Worship at 3am: the hymn she hums during the drug round
  • Finding a church that meets on a Tuesday, and why that is not second best

Daniel ends with a short reflection for anyone whose job keeps them from the pew.

Transcript
Welcome back to Monday Morning Faith, I am Daniel Mensah Boateng. My guest today has a question that I think a lot of you carry quietly. Esther Adjei is a nurse in Kumasi. She works nights on a surgical ward, and for eight years her roster has put her at work on most Sunday mornings. She told me that for most of that time she felt like a bad Christian. Not because anyone said so. Because of the empty seat. We are going to talk about what the Sabbath is actually for, what Jesus did on it and who was annoyed, the elder who finally told her something that changed her mind, and the hymn she hums at three in the morning while she does the drug round. If your job keeps you from the pew, this one is for you. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.

When your boss asks you to round the numbers

Daniel tells the story of the invoice he was asked to adjust in 2014, what he did, what it cost him, and what Proverbs and a Tema accountant have to say about small dishonesty.
