The email list you forgot you had

Almost every small shop has a list of customers it has quietly ignored for years. Callum sits with the owner of a Brighton gift shop who has 3,400 addresses and no idea what to say to them, and they write the first email live.

  • Why a dusty list is still worth more than a new ad campaign
  • The apology email, and why it outperforms the sales email
  • Writing like a shopkeeper, not like a brand
  • Sending at 7pm on a Sunday and what the open rate did
  • The orders that came in before the episode was finished

Your homework: find your list, count it, and do not send anything yet.

Transcript
Hello, Callum Pryce here, and this is Nobody Clicked the Banner. This week we are not spending any money at all, which will please my mother. We are in Brighton with the owner of a gift shop who has, sitting in an old Mailchimp account, three thousand four hundred email addresses of people who bought from her and said yes, keep in touch. She has not written to them since 2021. She is mortified. I am delighted, because that list is worth more than any ad we could run. So we are going to write the first email together, on air, and it is going to start with an apology. Then we press send on a Sunday evening and see what lands by Monday morning. Spoiler, it is more than four phone calls. You are listening on Witspeak Podcasts.
